KIYIT, 28 Jul: The Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) here in East Siang district, in collaboration with the Borguli wildlife range under Daying Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary, organised a plantation programme on Saturday to promote environmental conservation and wildlife protection, as well as to educate students about the importance of wildlife protection and afforestation.
Borguli Wildlife Range Forest Officer (RFO) Konseng Chowpoo, who attended the programme, delivered a speech, emphasising the critical role of trees in maintaining ecological balance, and the importance of protecting wildlife habitats.
The plantation drive was commenced by KGBV Head Teacher Mone Jamoh and the oldest woman staffer of the school, Aroty Pegu. Following this, students of Classes 9 and 10 and the teachers of the school planted over 60 saplings of various native species in the school premises.
Members of the wildlife department provided guidance on proper planting techniques, and apprised the participants of the significance of each species in the local ecosystem.
The head teacher said, “Planting more trees will not only help humans but will also support the whole biodiversity. Planting trees makes the environment immediately more beautiful. Trees help prevent soil erosion. They also absorb different pollutants and thus make the air, water and earth cleaner.”
Following the plantation drive, the members of the wildlife department apprised the teachers and the students of the impact of deforestation, the benefits of biodiversity, and simple steps that individuals can take to protect the environment.
