VELLORE, 13 Mar: The medical team of Naruvi Hospitals here successfully performed a complex 8-hour surgery on a 55-year-old man from Kuppam, who was under coma after blood vessels had burst in his brain.
It is reported to be the first of its kind in India, stated a Naruvi Hospitals release.
Dr. G.V. Sampath, chairman, Naruvi Hospitals, congratulated the medical team of highly skilled and accomplished surgeons for the procedure that has resulted in the full recovery of the patient, who is now back on his feet and who has commenced his normal routine.
Addressing the media after the successful procedure, Dr. G.V. Sampath said, “A few months ago, Mr. Murali, hailing from Kuppam in Andhra Pradesh was admitted at Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore, in an unconscious condition and with a swelling on his head. A team of neurosurgeons, cardio surgeons, and anaesthetists held discussions about the necessary procedure to be carried out. After deciding that a surgery had to be performed to plug the pipe burst to enable normal blood flow, a team of doctors headed by Dr. Paul Henry, neurosurgeon, Dr. Boopesh Pugazhendhi, Dr. Sivakumar, and cardio surgeon Dr. Vinayak Shukla, Dr. Ray George, anaesthetists Dr. Saravanan, and Dr. Rajasekar, commenced the procedure.”
“During this surgery, the patient’s blood was temporarily diverted from their body using a heart-lung machine, which kept the blood flowing and oxygenated while the heart was stopped. To prevent blood clotting, special medications were added. The body was then cooled down to 18°C (64°F), much lower than the normal body temperature of 36°C (97°F). This cooling process helped protect the brain, allowing it to survive without damage for up to 45 minutes while the surgery was performed. Once the brain surgery was complete, the body was warmed back to its normal temperature, the heart was restarted, and the blood was safely returned to the body, restoring normal circulation. Mr. Murali was able to recover fully after a few days. After being discharged, Mr. Murali was able to get back to his normal routine,” Dr. Sampath said, adding that it was reported to be among the first of its kind surgery in India.
Interacting with the media, Mr. Murali said, “I lost my consciousness after I developed the problem in the brain. While I was taken to a local hospital in my hometown the facilities there were barely enough to treat my complex problem and I came to Naruvi Hospitals. The team of doctors here provided the best possible medical treatment and thanks to them, I recovered fully and I am glad to be here in front of you today. I have recovered fully and I have re-joined my work.”
