Mein emphasises on ‘contract farming’ in remote areas

PASIGHAT, 10 Jul: The three-day second zonal training camp for the BJP’s Kishan Morcha office bearers and progressive farmers of eight northeastern states, hosted by the state unit of the Kishan Morcha, began at the College of Horticulture & Forestry here in East Siang district on Sunday.
The programme is aimed at making the Kishan Morcha office bearers and progressive farmers aware of modern agriculture technologies and agro-climatic conditions, besides the farmers’ welfare schemes initiated by the central government.
Addressing the inaugural function, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein urged the participants to “learn technical know-how of the agriculture and allied activities and help rural farmers to avail the technologies.”
He also stressed on initiating “contract farming” in the remote areas, saying that “the rough terrain in the remote areas should be covered under this system of shared farming for more economic gain.”
The DCM also highlighted the central and the state governments’ initiatives for water conservation.
Agriculture Minister Tage Taki in his address said that the state government is according priority to the farming sector.
“There is a need to exchange farming knowledge among farmers of the region to develop the northeastern region as a hub of spice production,” Taki said, and encouraged the farmers to “take more interest in vegetable and spices production.”
He also urged the Kishan Morcha workers to help the farmers in this regard.
Health Minister Alo Libang asked the farmers to “go organic to get rid of cancer and other ailments caused by chemical intoxication,” while state BJP president Biyuram Wahge spoke on “self-reliance through farming of edible crops, vegetables and spices.”
Among others, MLAs Kaling Moyong and Chau Zingu Namchoom and a host of state BJP leaders attended the inaugural programme.
