ITANAGAR, 8 Sep: Experts highlighted global malnutrition challenges and the role of food industries in promoting public health in the second lecture of the international series ‘Food ConnectsUs’, organized jointly by the anthropologydepartment of Dera Natung Government College (DNGC) and Kolkata (WB)-based Mrinalini Datta Mahavidyapith, on 8 September.
In his keynote address, DNGC Principal Dr MQ Khan spoke on how food is closely related to diverse cultures, determined by history and geography of the territory. He said that the lecture series is an initiative to understand food diversity and nutritional values of humankind.
Edelwise C Sicat, RND, MPH from Philippines delivered a lecture on the topic ‘Food and advocacy partnership’, highlighting malnutrition challenges in the Philippines and the role of food industries in promoting public health through product development, education and awareness. Sicat also spoke on the importance of forging a public-industry-society alliance to combat malnutrition.
She further spoke about the dietary modules of pinggang pinoy (healthy plate) for kids, recipe development, nutrition education, and evaluation under the initiative of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute, the principal research arm of the Philippines government in food and nutrition under the Department of Science and Technology.
The lecture was followed by a question- answer session between the speakers and the audience.
The session was attended by 125 participants from the collaborating institutions.
