PASIGHAT, 31 Jan: The East Siang Krishi Vigyan Kendra [KVK] has initiated a series of 10 capacity building programmes of one-day each to strengthen horticultural crop cultivation through different scientific approaches in East Siang district.

The training programmes, being held between 31 January and 11 February, aim to strengthen horticultural crop cultivation through scientific and location-specific technologies, thereby enhancing productivity, sustainability, and farmers’ income in the district.

The training will cover a wide range of topics, including production and propagation technologies, post-harvest management and value addition in horticultural crops, mushroom farming, crop protection, horticulture-based integrated farming systems, nutrient management and natural farming, cultivation techniques of floriculture and medicinal plants, protected cultivation, and nursery management.

Attending the inaugural training programme, College of Horticulture & Forestry (CHF) Dean Dr L Wangchu highlighted the immense potential of mandarin and dragon fruit varieties in East Siang district and emphasised the importance of adopting improved horticultural practices for better economic returns.

KVK Head Dr Brijendra Singh Rajawat also advised the participants to grow exotic crops for better income.

Subject matter specialists conducted sessions on production technology of dragon fruit and avocado, pest and disease management in exotic fruits and vegetables, production technologies, and economic potential of exotic vegetables in East Siang district.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation of farmers on the first day and is expected to significantly contribute to the adoption of scientific horticultural practices and livelihood improvement of farming communities in East Siang.

The training programmes are being conducted with funding support from the Central Institute of Horticulture, Medziphema, Nagaland.
