PASIGHAT, 12 Mar: The women’s cell of the Arunachal Pradesh University Students’ Union conducted an awareness programme focused on menstrual hygiene at the Academic Block A seminar hall of the university here in East Siang district on Thursday.

“The event was aimed to educate students on health maintenance and social advocacy regarding menstruation,” the university informed in a release.

Dr Subham Singh, a health and hygiene expert from the Arunachal Life Saving Foundation, served as the resource person.

During the session, Dr Singh addressed the physiological aspects of menstruation, detailing the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, such as appetite changes, fatigue, and physical discomfort, and the importance of monitoring for conditions like anaemia and urinary tract infections.

A key focus of the presentation was the elimination of social taboos. Dr Singh emphasised that menstruation is a natural biological process, and encouraged students to speak openly about their needs, including requesting for sanitary products, without hesitation.

Additionally, the programme included a practical demonstration on the use and maintenance of menstrual cups. Dr Singh explained that the devices are a safe, reusable option when properly sterilised in boiling water for approximately 15 minutes.

The initiative concluded with an interactive Q&A session, providing students with practical health information and reinforcing the importance of proper hygiene practices within the university community.

Faculty members and students from various departments attended the programme.
