ITANAGAR, Sep 28: Trekker taxi operators in the capital complex abruptly suspended their services on Friday to protest the detention of a fellow driver, leaving several passengers stranded.
Most of the commuters were forced to pay exorbitant fares to autorickshaws and Tempos to reach their destinations as the Trekker drivers refused to budge from their stand.
On Thursday, a group of women passengers had lodged a complaint with the administration and police about the sudden hike in the taxi fare without any notification from the competent authority.
The passengers claimed that they were verbally abused and forced out of a Trekker by its driver in Naharlagun on 24 September when they questioned him about the sudden fare hike.
The Naharlagun police station OC later informed that the Trekker and its driver have been detained, and the complainants have sought a written apology from the driver.
The Trekker drivers on their part have said they would continue their protest until the driver is released from detention.
According to information received from the OC, the complainants and taxi drivers were engaged in negotiations at the Naharlagun police station at the time of filing this report.
