ITANAGAR, Feb 4: The Northeast regional centre (NERC) of the GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment and Sustainable Development (GBPNIHESD) organised a training programme on ‘low-cost rural technologies’ at the GBPNIHESD-NERC’s rural technology centre at Dera Natung Government College (DNGC) here on 4 February.
Addressing the participants, DNGC Principal Dr NT Rikam urged the students to learn rural technology “and apply it at individual levels as well as commercial levels for the benefit of local communities.”
GBPNIHESD-NERC scientist Dr KS Kanwal spoke on environmental and socioeconomic benefits of low-cost rural technologies, with examples of sustainable utilization of bamboo in sectors like food industry, construction, handicrafts, etc, which, Kanwal said, “can become a major source of income in the state of Arunachal Pradesh.”
GBPNIHESD-NERC scientist (in-charge) MS Lodhi gave a lecture on rural technologies, while DNGC Associate Professor (Zoology) Dr P Nanda advised the participants to “understand multidisciplinary aspects of agricultural ecology to manage it in the most sustainable way.”
DNGC Associate Professor (Botany) Amum Tamuk also gave her inputs.
Later, a field demonstration and hands-on training in low-cost technologies like vermin-composting, bio-briquette, plastic film technology, etc, was held for the participants. The applications of an automatic weather station were also demonstrated.
The programme was attended by 40 participants, including students and faculty members of the college’s botany and zoology departments.
