ITANAGAR, Jan 24: The Students’ Union of NERIST (SUN), with the support of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) on Wednesday demanded that the fact-finding committee setup to investigate charges of molestation against a faculty member be brought out in the open at the earliest.
Addressing reporters here at the Press Club on Wednesday, Students said a faculty of the Mathematics department had allegedly molested a base model engineering student on December 2017, following which a fact-finding committee was constituted, with NERIST Dean (planning) Anwar Hussain leading the committee.
The committee has reportedly submitted its report on 12 January to the institute’s director, but has not made the findings open to the students who are seeking justice for the victim.
An FIR in this regard has not been registered with the police yet as the committee report is awaited.
SUN president Banta Natung questioned the delay and sought for the facts to be placed out in the open so that necessary action could be taken.
He also clarified on rumours doing rounds that students of the institute had assaulted the professor for his alleged misdemeanour and said that “the claims are baseless and no student has assaulted the professor”.
It was also informed that the matter was not brought out in the media to give some time to the committee, but the delay in making the report public, has compelled them to speak out.
Meanwhile, an official of the NERIST confirmed of the complaint against the professor and informed this daily that the authorities are also waiting to look into the report of the committee before taking a decision on the matter.
The teacher, identified as Prof M M Dixit by the students, could not be contacted by this daily for a statement.
