‘Negligence by officials leads to large scale destruction of forest’

SAGALEE, May 5: The Clean & Green Sagalee (C&GS) has appealed to the state government as well as the Forest department to strictly instruct the forest officials posted under Sagalee sub-division to discharge duty, stating their negligence towards the duty has resulted in large scale destruction of natural resources.
A team of the organization visited Leporiang and Parang circles and Depo-Kunglo areas under Toru circle of Sagalee sub-division of Papum Pare district on 4-5 May and held meetings with the locals, panchayat leaders and GBs, where the team came to know that “the forest officials of these areas were totally ineffective in discharging duty”, which has resulted in unabated destruction of forest resources.
“There are four forest check gates in these areas, But these illegal activities are going on unabated in spite of having these check gates,” said the C&GS in a release.
The organization opined that the GBs may be given an additional duty of protecting the natural resources of their respective areas by providing them with additional remuneration.
The GBs of those areas have reportedly told the organization that they are interested in protecting the natural resources and even ready to man the check posts, if they are given additional remuneration.
