Fish Farmers’ Day celebrated

DIRANG, Jul 10: The West Kameng Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) celebrated Fish Farmers’ Day at the yak research centre here and at Sangti village on Tuesday.
The Blue Revolution in India started on this day years ago with the development of fish seed production technology through induced breeding, at Angul in Odisha, by Prof Hiralal Chaudhuri under the guidance of Dr KH Alikunhi.
Their pioneering work led to the aqua-explosion in the country, principally through the development of quality fish carp seed production. Hundreds of hatcheries sprang up in the country, based on the induced breeding technology.
The celebration in Dirang saw the participation of fish farmers and staff from the KVK, including senior scientist Dr ND Singh, fisheries scientist Dr VK Mishra, agri extension subject matter specialist Dr NK Mishra, and agronomy scientist Pem Thinley.
Various aspects of fish breeding and fish production technology and their role in doubling farmers’ income, along with suitable integration of fish farming with horticulture/agriculture crops were discussed.
