Pongsa Saham memorial tourney kicked off

DC to sponsor football and volleyball aspirants

LONGDING, Jul 20: The district level football and volleyball tournament being organized by the Longding District Students’ Union (LDSU) in memory of former AAPSU general secretary late Pongsa Saham was kicked off by Tirap Deputy Commissioner PN Thungon here on Friday.
Twenty-nine football teams and 21 volleyball teams are participating in the tournament, themed ‘Unity for development’.
Addressing the gathering at the inaugural function, Longding DC Vikram Singh Mallik commended the LDSU for organizing the tournament in memory of the acclaimed student leader. The DC also offered tributes to late Saham.
Impressed with the overall arrangement of the programme, the DC announced to sponsor the top 20 players from the tournament for a six-month football and volleyball coaching.
“I wish that when the players represent my district, they come back winning. I request Longding DSO Ahua Wangsu to identify the best 20-25 players from this tournament and submit the names to my office. I will bear all the expenses required for their coaching,” the DC said.
LDSU president Tingngo Wangsu remembered Pongsa Saham as the most prominent student leader from the district. Noksa Saham, younger brother of Pongsa Saham, expressed gratitude to the LDSU for organising the event in memory of his brother.
LDSU general secretary Panjam Wangsu also spoke.
Earlier, the students of the government higher secondary school here performed a cultural programme in presence government officers, former PRI members, local leaders, students, and founder president of Wancho Students’ Union Laichoi Wangpan. (DIPRO)
