The institute’s senior technical officer, Dr Budhen Ch Baruah highlighted the prospects of mushroom cultivation for self-sustenance and economic benefit.
“Edible mushroom is also a very good source of Vitamin D,” he informed, and advised the farmers to cultivate known varieties of mushroom available at the NEIST branch.
A demonstration on preparing mushroom bags was presented during the programme.
Dr Baruah also highlighted the hazardous effects of using inorganic fertilizers and pesticides for food-yielding crops, and stressed on the use of vermicompost.
The participants were later taken to the low-cost mushroom and vermicompost production units at the NEIST campus.
