Tea garden supervisor kidnapped, ransom demanded

PASIGHAT, Nov 12: The supervisor-cum-storekeeper of Sati Tea Estate in Bamchuk in Namsai district has been kidnapped by a group of suspected armed militants.
The tea estate belongs to former MLA Nang Sati Mein, wife of Deputy CM Chowna Mein. The kidnappers have demanded a ransom of Rs 3 crore.
The victim, identified as Debabrata Deb, was kidnapped from his temporary residence at around 7.15 pm on Sunday evening.
The kidnappers were carrying sophisticated weapons and had reportedly introduced themselves as members of Udoy Asom group of the outlawed ULFA-Independent faction, the police said.
Security forces have swung into action to ensure the safe release of Deb, it added.
Militant outfits have been using the dense jungles of Namsai area, bordering Tinsukia district of North Assam, as their hideouts.
Several subversive acts like kidnapping, extortion, ambush and other antisocial activities have earlier been reported along the Changlang-Namsai and Tinsukia border areas. (With PTI input)
