Centrally-funded institutions must focus on student placement: Governor

ITANAGAR, Feb 7: Governor BD Mishra on Thursday said Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), the NIT and the NERIST, which are centrally-funded institutions, must focus on placement of their students, and on improvement of their institutional rankings.
The governor said this while chairing the presentation session of the Placement Review Committee (PRC) of its final report to the state cabinet, at the Raj Bhavan here. Chief Minister Pema Khandu, DCM Chowna Mein, Home Minister Kumar Waii, Education Minister Honchun Ngandam, and Power Minister Tamiyo Taga were present at the meeting.
The governor had constituted the PRC to study, deliberate and suggests ways and means to improve the institutional ranking prospects and opportunities for the students for job placement within the existing human and financial resources of the universities and educational institutions.
Mishra emphasized on active involvement of teachers and placement cells for the success of the mission. While agreeing with the committee’s report, he urged the state government to appoint a nodal officer to coordinate the efforts between the state government and the placement cells. He also asked RGU, the NIT and the NERIST to create their placement cells, which he said must be headed by experienced and dedicated professors.
The governor advised the council of ministers to “strengthen the placement cells by helping them in inviting big business houses and assisting the students in getting internship in good companies.”
The chief minister also stressed the need to bring reforms in the education sector. Expressing appreciation for the governor’s initiative, he advocated having a timeframe to implement the recommendations of the PRC.
Chief Secretary Satya Gopal, Education Secretary Madhu Rani Teotia and cabinet ministers also shared their views in support of the PRC’s recommendations.
The convenor of the PRC, Dr Ani Taggu, made a PowerPoint presentation on the committee’s study and recommendation.
Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Secretary Onit Panyang and the heads of RGU, the NIT and the NERIST also attended the meeting. (Raj Bhavan)
