HAPOLI, Jun 19: Students and teachers from various schools participated in an awareness programme on disaster management organised at the Lal Bahadur Shastri School here in Lower Subansiri district on Tuesday by World Vision India (WVI) in collaboration with the Lower Subansiri DDMA.
Addressing the participants, District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO) Nima Drema highlighted the safety measures to be taken in the event of natural calamities.
“Children are the most vulnerable during natural calamities. Therefore it is necessary to educate them on the dos and don’ts during any natural calamity,” she said, and stressed on the importance of providing students with “safe and structurally sound environment in the schools by preparing school disaster management plans.”
Underscoring the role of teachers and school management committees (SMC), the DDMO said teachers and SMC members should be knowledgeable about disaster management “and prepare themselves and the students for any mishap.”
WVI’s programme manager David Dutta enumerated the preparedness activities to be initiated in schools, and urged the participating teachers to prepare safety plans for their respective schools.
The team later distributed activity books on disaster preparedness among the children. (DIPRO)
