Doc nun receives int’l human rights award

NEW DELHI, Dec 10: A missionary nun, Dr Rose Tom, who works in Arunachal, was conferred the International Human Rights Award-2019 by the International Human Rights Council here on Monday.
Dr Tom, a gynaecologist who hails from Kottayam district of Kerala and has over 33 years of work experience across the country, is working for the last four years at the Krick and Bourry Memorial Hospital (KBMH) in Injan village, in Changlang district.
“I am totally humbled by this honour,” said the 67-year-old nun, who belongs to the Sacred Heart Congregation of Pala Province, Kerala. She came to Arunachal in 2015, responding to a special invitation from bishop George Pallipparambil of the Miao diocese, to serve in the KBMH.
Speaking on the occasion, she said, “Healthcare service is still a major concern for the people in Arunachal.”
Accepting the award, she said, “This award is for the hundreds of health workers like me who walk for days to care for the sick in the last villages of Arunachal.”
