Police gun down LDCM leader in ‘encounter’, five arrested

JONAI (Assam), 12 May: The Assam Police gunned down a leader of Liberal Democratic Council of Misingland (LDCM) during an ‘encounter’ in Simen Chapori in Assam’s Dhemaji district on Tuesday night.

The slain militant has been identified as Bani Kr Kumbang, alias Yaka Kumbang of Simen Chapori.

He was involved in numerous criminal activities, including drug dealing and robbery, which took place in Roing and Pasighat in Arunachal during the last few years.

“The militant was killed on the spot in retaliatory firing,” the police said.

A shopkeeper was shot and severely injured by four cadres of the LDCM led by Kumbang at No.1 Sirampuriya village under Jonai police station during a failed robbery attempt on Monday midnight. Later, police arrested five cadres of the outfit, who are currently under the custody of Jonai police.

Three pistols with ammunition, a car, three motorcycles and three mobile phones used by them were seized by police.

The police registered cases under sections- 386/ 447/ 307/ 34 IPC and Arms Act against them.

Further investigation is on to nab other members of the outfit.

The LDCM cadres had shot dead a Congress party worker at Dekapam (Jonai) bordering Seren (Lower Siang) in 2017. Later, the police arrested its self-styled commander along with some members of the outfit.
