Landslide kills one in Johat Colony, another drowns in Payu river in K/Kumey

KOLORIANG, 18 Jun: One person lost her life while two others sustained grievous injuries when their house was hit by a massive landslide in Johat Colony here in Kurung Kumey district on Friday.

“The heavy rain-triggered landslide completely wiped out the residential house of one Sangkung Bagang. All the three victims were buried under the debris for about an hour,” informed OC Gejum Basar.

Among the injured is a pregnant woman, who is likely to be airlifted to Naharlagun.

The deceased has been identified as Bengia Yanium (18), daughter of Bengia Tanang, of Jiri village, who happened to be visiting her sister Sangkung Passa.

The elder brother of the deceased, Bengia Talik informed that the incident occurred at 3:30 am. “The body was retrieved with the help of neighbours,” he added.

Earlier, one Bengia Nikih (5), son of Bengia Tali, of Yapak-II village, drowned in the Payu river. His dead body was recovered from the spot and his mortal remains were taken to Yapak-II village.

Meanwhile, Kurung Kumey DC Nighee Bengia and DDMO (in-charge) Abu Taba rushed to the place of the landslide incident to assess the loss of life and properties.

The DC directed the DDMO to extend a monetary relief of Rs 10,000 to the aggrieved family, along with making arrangement for provision of relief materials. (DIPRO)
