Cleanliness prog organized

MANI, 15 Oct: Ninety-eight students and others took part in a cleanliness programme themed ‘Waste to wealth’, organized by the Papum Pare KVK at the government secondary school (GSS) here recently as part of the ‘Special national swachhta campaign’.

During the programme, KVK Head Dr Bangkeng Perme emphasized on segregating wastes into different types and using different coloured dustbins for different types of waste.

KVK scientist Tadang Meena spoke on using vermicompost to improve soil quality and enhance waste management.

“Vermicomposting is an innovative way to address the increase in waste by turning organic matter into nutrient-rich compost for soils. This will ensure economic prosperity of the farmers and ecological security of the nation, besides producing nutritive and health protective organic foods for the society,” she said.

Plant protection scientist Tilling Tabyo highlighted ‘waste management of agriculture produce’, and solid waste management by recycling plastic items, while animal science expert Dr Yab Mate urged the students to use designated dustbins instead of littering the school compound with plastic packets.

GSS Headmaster Nabam Reekam and GB Yab Bola encouraged the participants to maintain cleanliness in the school compound and elsewhere.

The KVK later donated dustbins and brooms to the school.
