Job reservation for locals in private sector will be counterproductive

A new culture of reserving jobs for locals in the private sector is emerging in the country. The latest to join in this is Haryana. The state government passed a law that reserved upto 75 per cent of private jobs paying upto Rs 30,000 a month for the local residents. However, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has quashed the law. Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Singh Chautala has said that the government will move the Supreme Court after studying the judgment.

In true sense, the government shouldn’t challenge the order. The populist act to introduce reservation for locals in the private sector was bad in law and unfriendly to industry and business. This will be counterproductive and will drive away the talents. The private sector thrives on hiring the best of the business from across India and the globe. Instead of carrying out such exercises, the government should make other plans to create employment opportunities for the locals. Further, the labour law should be strengthened, so that private sectors do not manipulate the existing laws to their advantage. The interests of the labourers should be taken care of.
