Editor,
I am writing to bring the chief minister’s attention to the growing menace of lottery ticket sales and the undue pressure exerted on government employees in the name of fundraising for societal welfare. While the intention behind such initiatives may be to support public welfare programmes, in practice, they often lead to financial exploitation, coercion, and psychological distress among employees.
Government employees are increasingly being forced or pressured to purchase lottery tickets or contribute to fundraising schemes under the pretext of supporting social causes. This not only places an unfair financial burden on them but also fosters an environment of fear and obligation. Many employees, fearing repercussions or loss of goodwill, reluctantly comply, leading to undue stress and financial strain.
Furthermore, the widespread proliferation of lottery schemes has resulted in several social evils, including gambling addiction, financial ruin for lower-income groups, and even cases of fraudulent practices. Many families suffer as individuals get trapped in a vicious cycle of gambling, hoping for a financial breakthrough but instead sinking deeper into debt.
In light of these concerns, I sincerely urge the chief minister’s office to consider the following measures:
- Introduce a legal framework that explicitly prohibits forcing government employees to purchase lottery tickets or contribute to fundraising schemes under any circumstances.
- Implement strict guidelines to regulate the sale of lottery tickets and prevent their aggressive promotion among vulnerable sections of society.
- Launch awareness programmes to educate people about the financial risks and social consequences of excessive lottery participation.
- Encourage transparent and voluntary means of fundraising that do not rely on coercion or exploit government employees.
The CM’s intervention on this critical issue will not only protect government employees from undue financial and mental stress but also safeguard the broader society from the harmful impacts of unregulated lottery activities. I trust that the CM will take necessary steps to curb this growing concern and promote a fair and ethical system of governance.
I hope for a positive response and effective action in the interest of justice and welfare.
Boss KT
