Editor,

Medical negligence in Arunachal Pradesh is a growing concern, with recent incidents sparking widespread outrage and demands for accountability.

Two tragic incidents at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) – the state’s only premier medical institute – have highlighted the need for improved healthcare. A 22-year-old woman, Bengia Ama Gora, died during a Caesarean section on 31 August due to alleged medical negligence, and an infant died after being administered a sleeping injection for a simple fever, sparking demands for justice and accountability.

These incidents are not isolated cases, as in 2015, the Gauhati High Court held the Arunachal government responsible for a woman’s death due to medical negligence and absence of a blood bank at a district hospital, directing the state to pay Rs 2.5 lakh in compensation.

Given the TRIHMS’ significance as the state’s sole premier medical institute, the responsibility on its shoulders is immense. It caters to a large population, and any lapse in healthcare services can have far-reaching consequences. The public is calling for justice, accountability, and improved healthcare services. Authorities must conduct a thorough investigation into these incidents, ensure that hospitals have essential facilities like blood banks, and hold medical staff accountable for their actions.

The government must address systemic issues leading to these tragedies, provide quality healthcare to the people of Arunachal, and ensure that the TRIHMS functions efficiently and effectively. This includes providing adequate infrastructure, trained staff, and necessary resources to handle complex medical cases. The people of Arunachal deserve better healthcare, and it’s the government’s responsibility to deliver it.
