ITANAGAR, 18 Jun: Itanagar Capital Region DC Talo Potom has appealed to all to cooperate with the administration and the police in the fight against the growing drug menace in the ICR.
On Friday, the DC convened a virtual meeting with the in-charges of the drug rehabilitation centres within the ICR and discussed measures to check the drugs problem. He assured of all possible assistance and cooperation to the rehabilitation centres.
IMC Mayor Tame Phassang emphasized on finding out the root causes of drug abuse to effectively fight the menace. “A strong mechanism in this regard needs to be worked out,” he said.
Phassang offered his support for the establishment of a rehabilitation centre equipped with all facilities in the ICR.
DMO Dr Mandip Perme opined that the rehabilitation process should be taken up on a war footing.
The Narcotics Control Bureau’s state nodal officer Oli Koyu also stressed the need for developing a proper action plan to effectively deal with the problem in the ICR.
“A proper system regarding drug control needs to be worked out. As relapse in drug addicts is very high, follow-up status of the addicts needs to be done,” he said.
Koyu also informed about the government’s programmes and policies for controlling the drug menace.
ICR SP Jimmy Chiram said that those who come out of the rehabilitation centres after recovery “should be followed up properly to ensure complete rehabilitation.” He said that the capacity of the rehabilitation centres also needs to be increased.
Drug de-addiction cell state nodal officer Dr Riken Rina highlighted the activities of the drug de-addiction centres in the state.
The in-charges of the drug rehabilitation centres highlighted some important issues requiring the government’s immediate attention.
Deepak Nabam from Deepak Nabam Living Home informed that his centre houses not only drug addicts but also old people, orphans, widows and the downtrodden.
“I am running the centre with the sole motive to serve humanity,” he said.
Nabam said that every effort is made at the centre to help the addicts recover from addiction.
Techi Kecha from Emmanuel Rehab Centre emphasized on conducting intensive awareness campaigns to educate the people about the harmful effects of drug abuse and addiction.
