NAHARLAGUN, Dec 24: Along with the rest of the country, the legal metrology & consumer affairs (LMCA) department on Monday observed National Consumer Day statewide with the theme ‘Timely disposal of consumer cases’.
The day is observed to commemorate the enactment of the Consumer Protection Act in Parliament on 24 December, 1986.
The department observed the day at its headquarters here by organizing a ‘meeting-cum-awareness programme on consumer protection’ for its officers and officials.
Legal Metrology Controller Hoktum Ori urged the officers and officials to update their knowledge on consumer protection in order to be better able to guide and advice people to become responsible consumers, and also to fight against unfair trade practices.
Assistant Controller Taba Tabin highlighted the importance of the consumer helpline, and explained the procedures of reporting complaints of unfair trade practices.
Earlier in the morning, Ori flagged off a vehicle advertising tips for the protection of consumers’ rights.
The publicity vehicle passed through all the sector roads and other important locations in the capital complex, besides places like Doimukh, Chimpu, etc.
The department also carried out an extensive publicity campaign through banners, posters and hoardings.
The LMCA department in Lower Subansiri district celebrated National Consumer Day at the VKV in Yazali.
LMCA Inspector Kesang Tashi explained to the students and teachers the salient features of the Consumer Protection Act, and the consumers’ rights. He also explained how aggrieved consumers can file their grievances through the district consumer redressal forum.
Tashi later demonstrated how unfair trade practices are carried out by unscrupulous traders.
