ITANAGAR, Feb 18: Veteran political leader and former home minister James L Wanglat joined the Indian National Congress (INC) in a function at Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan here on Monday.
Wanglat said he submitted his resignation from the BJP on 6 February for “its attitude and stand on the citizenship amendment bill, which was against the interests of the people of the Northeast region and the indigenous tribal people of the state.”
Claiming that the BJP leaders were not given a platform to place their grievances, Wanglat said, “Joining the Congress is like homecoming as I have served the party in the past and will continue to serve it.”
On whether he would contest in the parliamentary election from Arunachal East, Wanglat said he was “prepared to take up the responsibility if the party wishes so.”
Meanwhile, former Changlang zilla parishad chairperson Jowkhong Singpho, along with 17 other BJP gram panchayat members and public leaders of Miao assembly constituency, also joined the Congress party.
The programme was attended by Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee president Takam Sanjoy, state Congress Legislature Party leader Takam Pario, and other senior party leaders.
