Overburdened AWWs cannot be the foundation of quality pre-formal education: Meet

DOIMUKH, Jun 30: Anganwadi workers (AWW) with their multidimensional roles cannot be the foundation of quality pre-formal education. This was observed during a coordination meeting of the local administration here.
Concerned over the poor performance of the students of Class 1, the local administration convened its second coordination meeting with all the pre-primary education workers (anganwadi workers) of Doimukh and Gumto circles here on Friday.
The meeting also observed that appointment of dedicated teachers only can improve the quality of education at the pre-primary level.?
If the government wants quality education at the pre-primary level, then dedicated quality teachers should be appointed, the meeting observed.
The sub-divisional officer (SDO) reminded the AWWs that providing non-formal education at the pre-primary level is one of their most important duties and they should perform it with utmost dedication.
“The teachers in primary schools, according to government norms, should be teaching the students how to read and write; but they end up teaching the basics,” lamented the SDO.
In its previous coordination meeting, the local administration had informed the heads of various schools that the students getting admission in Class 1 do not have any idea about letters and numbers.
The Doimukh circle officer (CO) told the workers that regular inspection of the anganwadi centres will be conducted and the performance of students assessed, while the Gumto CO instructed the AWWs to prepare a proper curriculum in consultation with the CDPO.
The CDPO informed about the lack of proper infrastructure and funding, and the irregular and low honorarium received by the workers.
The anganwadi workers also expressed dissatisfaction with their honorarium and said they felt overburdened with their various duties. They informed that their duties as pre-primary education workers often coincide with their duties as health service providers.
The Doimukh block education officer appealed to the AWWs to discharge their duties sincerely. (DIPRO)
