Org seeks protection of villagers from Chakma militants

TEZU, Mar 1: The Mishmi Welfare Society (MWS) has demanded deployment of army personnel in Kathan village in Wakro circle of Lohit district to ensure the safety and security of the villagers.
Members of the MWS on Friday took out a peaceful rally here, condemning “the act of atrocities upon the villagers of Kathan by Chakma militants.”
The MWS members also submitted a memorandum to the DC, stating that the villagers of Kathan are “continuously harassed and threatened by armed Chakma militants.”
“There is total sense of insecurity in the village, and the villagers are not able to venture in their agriculture field due to fear psychosis,” the memorandum said.
Informing that the villagers are offering land free of cost for establishing a paramilitary headquarters or base camp in Kathan, the MWS demanded that such a base be established there at the earliest.
It also demanded evacuation of Chakmas from Mishmi areas, and demarcation of the boundary between Changlang and Lohit districts in Kathan area.
