Org seeks ban on dumping of waste on cremation ground

PASIGHAT, Sep 26: The North East Human Rights Organization has requested the East Siang district administration to issue an order putting a stop to the municipality’s dumping of solid waste on the cremation ground in Jarku, saying it is posing a threat to the health of the residents there.
In a representation to the deputy commissioner, the organisation on Thursday said the locals were facing “immense problem arising from mishandling of municipal solid waste by the Pasighat municipal council in the vicinity of their habitation.”
“The municipal workers burn the trash, thus polluting the surroundings as well as the environment. It is understood that the residents of the area have been requesting your office regarding the matter but your office has deliberately failed to take appropriate action against the authority concerned,” it said, adding that the location of the landfill was in contravention of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
“There is no mechanism for segregating the trash, and it is dumped in the open. Moreover, the present location of the disposal site is located near the Pasighat cremation ground, which is a flood zone located near the Siang river,” it said, and sought appropriate action against the authority concerned.
