POCSO court sentences minor’s rapist to 20-year RI

AALO, 3 Apr: The judge of the special POCSO court here in West Siang district has sentenced one Pakbin alias Mabin alias Kyabin Sikom alias Batak (22-23 years) to undergo 20 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and pay a fine of Rs 1,500.

Sikom is accused of raping a girl aged 8-9 years old in his residence in Sikarijo in Upper Subansiri district. An FIR to this effect had been lodged by the child’s mother at the Daporijo police station 8 September, 2021 – the same day that the incident occurred.

The Daporijo PS OC registered the case (No 50/21 u/s 376(2) (j) IPC, r/w Section 6 of POCSO Act, 2012) and investigation was launched. During investigation, it was found that the accused and the victim were  neighbours in the same locality.

After completion of investigation, the investigating officer filed his chargesheet against the accused (u/s 376 (2) (j)/506 IPC r/w Section 6 of POCSO Act), and forwarded the case to the special POCSO court here on 6 October, 2021, for trial.

During the trial, the accused pleaded guilty, and Special POCSO Court Judge Tage Halley convicted and sentenced him.

The fine amount imposed against the accused shall be paid to the victim through her parent(s)/guardian(s) immediately after receipt of the same. Further, as per the submission made by special public prosecutor K Angu, an application has been forwarded to the Arunachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority

for payment of compensation to the victim under the Arunachal Pradesh Victim Compensation Scheme, 2011. (DIPRO)
