24-yr-old man gets 10-year RI for raping minor

KHONSA, 12 May: The special POCSO court here in Tirap district on Thursday convicted one Rangpha Rangkham (24), of Channu village, for the offence of raping a minor girl, and sentenced him to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI), along with payment of fine.

POCSO Special Judge H Kashyap also referred the case to the Longding District Legal Service Authority for providing adequate compensation to the victim, as provided under the Arunachal Pradesh Victim Compensation Scheme, 2011.

In addition, the fine imposed upon the convict will also be given to the victim as cost for her rehabilitation.

On 3 May, 2019, Rangkham, on the pretext of roaming around, took the minor forcibly in a vehicle and raped her in his vehicle near Second Nallah, Longding. After committing the crime, the accused expelled her from the vehicle and abandoned her at Second Nallah.

The victim later called her friend and informed her about the matter over the phone. The friend came to the place of occurrence and rescued her, and later dropped her home.

The next day, the elder brother of the victim filed an FIR at the Longding police station, where a case [u/s 363/376 (2) (i)-IPC r/w 4 of POCSO Act] was registered.
