Seminar on drug abuse, trafficking

YINGKIONG, 16 Jun: Upper Siang ZPC Lumgeng Litin, along with ADC Kabit Apang, SP Jummar Basar, HoDs, representatives of CBOs and NGOs, and students and teachers of Royal Siang Academy participated in a seminar on the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking here on Thursday.

During the programme, DMO Dr Moli Riba highlighted the “functional status” of the drug de-addiction centre at the district hospital here.

Arunachal Pradesh Drug De-Addiction Society programme officer Dr Riken Rina made a presentation on various aspects of drug abuse and highlighted the “state scenario in the drug map of India.”

Stating that the responsibility of controlling the drug menace lies with every stakeholder, he urged the people “not to stigmatise the drug abusers who come out from rehabilitation to minimise the recurrence rate.”

The SP said that parents and family members “should play an ideal role model for their children,” adding that the society also has to play a role in this regard.

He shared the success story of Pongging village, which was once known for cultivation and consumption of opium, and said that the villagers there have resolved to stop poppy cultivation. He commended the role played by the Pongging Students’ Union in achieving the goal. (DIPRO)
