Mayor stresses on equal status for women

ITANAGAR, 20 Apr: Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) Mayor Tamme Phassang emphasised “the crucial role of women’s security and equal status in society for creating a just and equitable world” during a seminar on ‘Working of mahila thana (working efficiency and effectiveness)’, organised by the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) at the banquet hall here on Thursday.

“Women police stations (WPS) play a vital role in promoting women’s safety and security,” he said, and stressed that “safety and security of women are essential to ensure that they are treated fairly and given equal opportunities to succeed in all aspects of life.”

“By providing women with the necessary support and resources, such as women’s police stations, we can empower them to be active participants in society and promote gender equality,” Phassang added.

He said also that “WPS’ should be accessible and provide services such as counselling, legal advice, and medical assistance, which can help them to navigate the criminal justice system and begin the process of healing and recovery on time.”

The mayor stressed on providing workforce, infrastructure, equipment, vehicles, etc, to the WPS’ to enhance their efficiency and effectiveness.

“It is important to ensure that women police officers are provided with all the necessary resources to carry out their duties effectively, and to ensure the safety and security of women in the community,” Phassang said.

APSCW Vice Chairperson Nabam Yahi Tad said that the seminar on the importance of WPS’ was organised to “create awareness about the significance of the WPS’, especially for women who may feel uncomfortable sharing their grievances at a regular police station.”

She opined that the presence of WPS’ is essential to ensure that women’s grievances are addressed promptly and effectively.

“At present, there are eight districts in Arunachal Pradesh with separate women’s police stations, and the APSCW is in discussions with the government to increase this number,” she said.

Tad urged the women of the state to be aware of their rights but to refrain from misusing them.

“With the establishment of more WPS’ and continued efforts to raise awareness, women in Arunachal Pradesh will have a safer and more secure environment where they can access justice and support,” she added.
