KHONSA, 11 Feb: An awareness meeting on in situ conservation of indigenous fish species was held here in Tirap district on Friday.
Attending the programme, DC Taro Mize appealed to the people to conserve the rivers and streams and practice responsible fishing without harming the ecosystem.
SP Kardak Riba emphasized on the role of local NGOs in checking illegal fishing using unconventional methods and overexploitation of natural water bodies.
Riba also emphasized on proper implementation of the Arunachal Pradesh Fisheries Act, 2006.
6 Assam Rifles CO Col Amit Kumar Das assured to assist interested farmers in developing two to three fish ponds under the force’s civic action programme and Sadbhavna project. He urged interested farmers to submit their proposals through the fishery department.
36 Bn CRPF CO Pawan Kumar Singh also spoke on the importance of responsible fishing and conservation of local fish species.
District Fisheries Development Officer SK Jawal appealed to the people to refrain from illegal fishing. He also spoke on the need to form a district fisheries development society under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.
Fisheries Officer PK Thungdok listed out the schemes under the fisheries department.
Public leader from Chasa village, Sephua Wangsu appealed to all to shun hunting of wildlife and fishing using chemicals.
The programme was organized by the College of Fisheries of the Assam Agricultural University, Raha, in collaboration with the district fisheries development office here. It was sponsored by the National Mission on Himalayan Studies. (DIPRO)
