AALO, 20 Jun: The West Siang district administration will implement total ban on plastic products, in view of the solid waste management issue in the urban areas.
The decision was made during a meeting with regard to solid waste management, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Penga Tato, here on Monday.
The DC informed that the dumping ground at Hissam village “is under the court case (as) a public interest litigation has been filed over it by Reken Ingo.
“As per the court order, the district pollution control board and the district administration have been directed to reply within a short period regarding the Hissam dumping ground,” he said.
As per the guidelines of the Central Pollution Control Board of India, the dumping ground at Hissam does not fulfil the guidelines of the board.
A dumping ground in Gune-Bane area near Pobdi village had been approved, but the residents of the area opposed it.
“The district administration is working on relocating the dumping area to another location,” Tato said.
Urban Development EE Haley Welly informed that a private company in Mumbai “is taking interest to manage the solid waste of Aalo township to convert it to a power plant. So, for this project, huge area is required.”
Former minister Kento Ete urged the urban development department to “seek more funds for construction of roads and level grounds that are 10 kms away from the villages,” adding that land for the purpose has been identified.
DFO Jumdo Geyi requested the urban development department to “encourage the students to form an “eco-club, consisting of many students who will collect the plastic items for reuse of it, and eco-club will be awarded during the national programme.”
Besides HoDs, the meeting was also attended by the SP, and the Galo Ane president. (DIPRO)
