TAWANG, Aug 26: A legal awareness programme on ‘Monpa customary marriage system and its importance’ was organised by the Tawang District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in collaboration with the Women’s Welfare Association and Humans Right First Tawang at Zomkhang Hall here On Sunday.
Addressing the participants, the DLSA secretary spoke on the Monpa customary law of marriage, other ways of marriage, and ways and means to legalize marriage. He said that in order to get one’s relationship recognized and bring security in marriage, it is important that one gets married through either the customary system or the court. ??He also explained maintenance under Section 125 CrPC, punishment for bigamy under 494 IPC, protection under the Domestic Violence Act 2015, and property rights of women and children.
ADC Lobsang Tsering and Mon Mimang Tsokpa chairman Rinchen Dorjee also dwelt on ways and means of solemnizing marriage under the Monpa custom through rituals like Krimchang, Yerchang and Tikchang, and highlighted the steps in settlings cases of marital discord.
Various institutional mechanisms were also explained. The importance of Panchsheel in Buddhism was also reflected upon. (DIPRO)
