Memorial badminton championship gets underway

SEPPA, Jul 27: The first edition of the Taachi Pordung Memorial District Level Inter-Club Badminton Championship got underway at the officers’ badminton club here in East Kameng district on Friday.
Organized by the East Kameng Badminton Association (EKBA) in collaboration with the Arunachal State Badminton Association, the three-day tournament is sponsored by Bameng legislator Goruk Pordung, in memory of his late mother.
Ninety shuttlers representing five different badminton clubs of the district are participating in the championship, which will see its finals being held on Sunday.
Chayangtajo MLA Hayeng Mangfi in his inaugural address said, “Seppa will soon turn into a sports hub as many infrastructures of several sporting disciplines are being built in and around the township.”
Encouraging youngsters to participate in such competitions, Mangfi said one can not only gain physical and mental fitness through sports but can also make it a profession.
Pordung said the championship would be converted into a state level tournament in the future.
“This year the tournament is named after my mother, and so will it be for the next two years; however, after that, the championship will be named after my father,” Pordung said.
