Do everything for the weak and downtrodden, gov tells leaders

ITANAGAR, 13 May: Governor BD Mishra urged the legislative assembly speakers and deputy speakers to do everything for the weak, the downtrodden and the needy as “speakers, deputy speakers, legislators and parliamentarians are people’s leaders and highly placed in life.”

He was addressing the 18th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, India Region, Zone-III conference at the Dorjee Khandu auditorium in the legislative office complex here on Friday.

The governor also stressed the need to include a reference to the fundamental duties in the preamble to the Constitution, “in the same process when the preamble to the Constitution of India was amended and words socialist, secular and integrity were added to the preamble.”

Stating that the people look up to the speakers, deputy speakers, MLAs, MLCs and MPs with great expectations, Mishra said that the role of speakers and deputy speakers is not only critical but also exacting.

“It will always go to their credit to have the maximal useful and productive hours in the houses which they chair. With good pre-session interaction and consultation with individual members, they will be able to have the best productive session in the houses,” he said.

Citing the vandalism of the US senate, he cautioned the legislators and parliamentarians of the country that “they must remember that it takes decades to build up the reputation of the lawmaker bodies but it takes only an hour to mar the reputation of it.” (Raj Bhavan)
